Travertine

One of the most breathtaking and elegant looking stones; Travertine is often formed near hot mineral rich springs. As the gas from the springs rise to the surface of the stone, they become trapped and create a surface occupied by miniature cavities. These cavities are then filled and honed often with a dusty resin or epoxy, adding to the swirl and streaking affect of the stone. Not all Travertine are filled though, in fact some are left in their natural state solely for the rugged aged look. Although this look is very appealing and makes for great character, it also makes for a lot more maintenance. The pitted Travertine tends to trap a lot more dirt and due to its roughness, it does not allow for easy cleaning. Whether you decide on filled or unfilled Travertine, always remember with any natural stone, there will always be a variance. This is the beauty of having a natural product; you will never find the uniqueness of your floor in another home.
